Planning for the future — whether for a family, a business, or both — often involves complex financial and personal decisions. David Malcolm has spent much of his career helping clients navigate those decisions with confidence. In recent years, he has become deeply involved in the firm’s estate, gift, and trust work, assisting individuals and families with thoughtful strategies for preserving wealth and transferring it across generations.
David co-founded Lanigan Ryan in 1990 and continues to serve clients as a Director of the firm. With more than 45 years of experience in public accounting, he advises business owners and individuals on income tax planning, succession planning, and broader financial matters. His work frequently brings him alongside clients at important moments in their personal and professional lives, where practical guidance and long-term perspective are essential.
As one of the firm’s founders, David also continues to support many of the long-standing client relationships he helped establish while sharing his experience with younger professionals across the firm. His continued involvement in the firm’s estate, gift, and trust practice reflects both his depth of experience and his commitment to helping clients and colleagues navigate complex financial matters with clarity and confidence.
Throughout his career, David has also worked extensively with organizations in the not-for-profit, commercial construction, and real estate industries. In addition to tax advisory services, he has performed audits, reviews, and compilations for a wide range of clients.
David has long believed in giving back to the professional and local communities he serves. He has presented seminars to business owners and professional organizations on a variety of tax and financial topics and has volunteered significant time with the Associated Builders and Contractors Virginia Chapter. There, he served on the board of directors and as treasurer for 22 years, and later contributed to the national organization as a member of the Budget and Finance Committee for eight years and as national treasurer for two years. Outside of his professional involvement, David also spent many years volunteering in youth athletics as a head coach and manager and served as an Assistant Scout Master in his local scouting organization.
Outside the office, David enjoys spending time with his wife Susan, their three children, and two grandchildren. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he plays competitive softball on two teams and expects to play more than 130 games this year. He is also an avid Virginia Tech Hokies fan and enjoys traveling.
